Depth over width
With an abundance of knowledge and wisdom so readily available, it’s tempting to get pulled in many different directions.
I’ve fallen prey to that myself.
With discipline, over time I’ve learned to choose very wisely and to go deep with specific teachers and wisdom.
Of course, you want to ensure that anyone you are learning from is someone you should be listening to. Do your due diligence and make sure that they are the kind of person you want to emulate and have the results you’re wanting to create. Always apply discernment and listen to your gut for your inner wisdom.
There are so many teachers out there, but once you find the key people who you resonate with and are in alignment with your goals and values, consider going all in and being a humble student.
Having a select group of mentors gives me different perspectives and I find that there are some wonderful overlaps in their teachings which helps me to learn better by hearing things said in a new way.
With these specific teachers I revisit their courses, audios and books – often multiple times.
I know that in a new unit of time, I’m a different person and will hear something new and be able to apply the information in a new way. I’ll also hear things that I didn’t hear the first or second time.
Going deep helps keep me focused and avoids distractions and shiny objects.
Another way of looking at this is through Bruce Lee’s quote, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
Mastery comes from focus.
