People do change
If we give people the space – and the opportunity – people can do miraculous things, including change.
When we remain stuck in the past and keep seeing someone as their old self, we are doing them such a dis-service.
It doesn’t allow them the space to grow.
Instead of encouraging their truth to reveal, you’re contributing to keeping a person stuck.
Each moment is a new moment. Each day is a new day.
Surely something is new.
If you maintain the idea that people don’t change, then you’ll be right – and that’s what you’ll always find.
You get what you look for and what you believe.
By looking for changes and having a curious mindset, we are giving people the room to grow and change.
Releasing our past ideas and expectations, we can step into this now moment and see them without their past – as the new them.
A practical example of this is in the teaching world with troubled students. When they are trapped by their reputation – which will often follow them through each grade, being passed down from one teacher to the next – they rise to that expectation and may never quite bloom into the truth of who they are.
If instead, a teacher is conscious and able to see the student without their past history, without their past report cards, without the gossip from previous teachers, and simply see them anew and gave them a clean slate with high standards – the student can flourish. They have the opportunity to reinvent themselves without the weight of their past.
I am guilty of this with my family. Perhaps it’s because of the long history we each have with our families, but that’s such an easy place to fall into this trap, and one to ensure we continually remind ourselves to see with fresh eyes.
It requires presence and compassion to see people beyond their past.
I’m sure you want people to see you as “the new you” that you are today, so consider giving people that same grace.
Consider exploring the stories you have written about the people in your life and recognize if they need some updating – or releasing – so you are giving each person the opportunity to show up new – as the Truth of their being – in each now moment.
That’s what Love would do.
