Respect yourself first

How we respect the planet, people and the respect we receive from others – is a direct correlation to how much we respect ourselves.

I’ve been thinking about a previous work situation and how many valuable lessons I’ve extracted, despite it being very challenging time in my life and a very toxic environment. It was a real eye opener for me and changed the way I think about life and business – and has forced me to re-evaluate who I am and how I want to show up in the world.

Despite it being a time where I feel I was at my worst – and it’s hard not to look back without regrets –  I know I am so much better for the experience and that I have much to be grateful for. I have grown leaps and bounds since.

One thing that was very clear was that he didn’t care about or respect me – he was more of a bottom line, money guy over anything else – and the truth is, I didn’t respect myself or I wouldn’t have found my way there in the first place – nor would I have tolerated it.

It all starts with the one we look at each day in the mirror. We are each 100% responsible for what we create.

Eventually I lost all respect for him – and myself – gaining 55 pounds of pure anger and resentment and becoming a victim of my stories in the process.

It was a brilliant exercise in self respect and relationships, which I initially failed – epically.

As taught in A Course in Miracles, everything is a relationship – with ourselves, with our partners, our family and every component of your work environment – coworkers, clients, customers, your boss, etc. – and each relationship is an assignment.

What’s missing is what you’re not giving.

Respect was completely missing in the relationship. I didn’t respect myself – so how could I expect anyone to respect me?

When we have assignments with people, their job is to keep at it – until. I believe they “put up their hand” – at your request – and were willing to participate this lifetime in the service of your evolution. What a gift and a blessing.

By learning to respect myself – which included leaving that employment situation and releasing the 55 pounds – I’m showing up so much brighter in the world and am a better example for my kids.

This time in my life was one of my greatest opportunities and blessings, catapulting me along my spiritual journey and opening me up to magnificent possibilities.

I’m now on the path to doing what I’m here to do and being the person I know I’m here to become
