Take the time to understand

In our “fast paced” world, it can sometimes be very easy to quickly brush over things and really not take the time to fully understand the meaning behind someone’s text or post or comment, whether online or in person.

No wonder there are so many misunderstandings.

Whatever happened to listening deeply and to listening to understand?

Instead of assuming – ask clarifying questions or ask for more information so that you can fully comprehend a person’s thoughts, meaning or intentions.

Sometimes, it’s just a matter of slowing down, being present and re-reading the text and you may realize you totally read it incorrectly or misinterpreted it.

By asking questions, you may discover that you took it completely differently from the way the message was intended.

Obviously, through the written word, you are also missing out on facial expressions, tone, mannerisms and even the energy of the person, so give people the benefit of the doubt.

Show some grace. People are good. Remember that.

If you’re reading things wrong, maybe you’re looking for it – and you get what you look for.

On the flip side – if you’re the one sending or posting the message, slow down! Re-read before you hit send. Look for what (if anything) could possibly be misinterpreted and adjust accordingly and then send with love.

If we look for the person’s intention – and remember that people are good – it will go a long way in avoiding any misunderstandings.
